industrial architecture series: ford motor company factory
long beach ca.
ford motor company acquired the long beach site in the 1920's and commissioned
Albert Kahn of Detroit for the design of a model t manufacturing plant. Built
on marshland, the plant was constructed on a series of 50+ foot long concrete
piles. After many expansions and additions the plant was perminantly closed
n the1980's.
In 1996 the plant was demolished, and its 60,000 sf of ruble were crushed
and used in the construction of Pier A container terminal at the port of long
beach now occupying the site.
