Broadway Avenue in Los Angeles was for a time in the 1910's-40's the regional center for vaudville and movie theaters in the city. It's grand theaters played host to numerous awards ceremonies and movie premieres. But with the new theaters opening along hollywood boulevard in the 30's and later the advent of the multiplex theater and movement of department stores from downtown in the 50's, the theaters were slowly neglected and eventually closed.

Broadway is being revitalized today by a new population, with the theaters and department stores transformed into smaller discount retailers and churches catering to a mostly immigrant clientele. The vibrant signage and pedestrian activity has relivened this downtown street on weekends, creating a active zone amongst a mostly empty downtown. These photographs seek to capture this new activity and the eclectic signage, which transforms the street into a new marketplace.
