Macau

If there is a geographic center to expectation it may be in Macau right now. Beyond my expectations, and all the attendant roles I force a location into, there are the expectations of others: Local government, citizens, foreign capital, casino developers, and real estate companies. Not unlike most cities in the world, everyone has a vision of what their city should be. But the distinction here is that all expectations seem to be coming to fruition simultaneously and very rapidly.

This study is looking at the former Portuguese colony (now a Special Administrative Region of China) and its transformation from a small enclave into a gambling Mecca. In addition to the development, there is a fair amount of preservation and restoration of the region’s unique cultural heritage sites. These parallel motivations- to preserve and to build (and by extension to destroy)- make for a truly unique vision of a city.
