The word disavowal is Freudian terminology. Loss was central to Freud’s theory of the individual’s development. It is first experienced as hunger. The baby cries because it does not currently have access to the mother’s breast. Loss affects the split between the baby and the mother’s breast, between self and other, and causes the reaction upon which identity is built.
